On the hottest morning of the year so far, 7 of us participated in today’s work party. Bill and Richard painstakingly applied linseed oil to the new notice boards and ladder boards at the Peveril and Wheatcroft entrances. The rest of us went down the eastern boundary trying to gather more canes and guards from whips planted 4 or 5 years ago, picking up from where we got to last month. However, they were increasingly difficult to access because of the spreading of woodland edge shrubs, often thorny. We removed a few by reaching across from outside the fence, then moved into the woodland (thankfully cooler) and removed a few more from a place we could get to from the eastern path. We will need to have a further attempt in the autumn to look for any remaining guards. In addition, we scythed back vegetation that was making the central path near the southern end quite narrow. Thanks to all the brave participants!
