About the wood

Sharphill Wood is one of the closest patches of countryside to Nottingham City Centre.  It’s on a hill to the south of the city, overlooking Trent Bridge and West Bridgford (Grid Ref SK 586 349).

The wood is owned by Rushcliffe Borough Council. Three footpaths (public rights of way) traverse the wood and these are the responsibility of Nottinghamshire County Council. The wood is a designated Local Nature Reserve. It’s mixed broadleaf woodland of 9.6ha (24 acres) with many mature ash, beech, English oak, and lime trees.

A list of the trees and shrubs recorded in the wood , along with the Friends’s planting record, is available here.

The Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust advises on the management of the wood, which is governed by a 5-year Management Plan.

To see a list of the trees and shrubs to be found in the wood click here. There’s help with identifying trees and shrubs here.

To assist with planning the management tasks we have visualised the wood in several geographical areas or Zones.

We have a couple of aerial photos of the northern end of the wood (taken in 1984 and 1992).

We regret that there is no facility for placing memorials in the wood – see here
