This was the final scheduled work party of the summer, when we continue to be restricted because of bird nesting. Therefore the main focus was on clearing the official paths of vegetation, particularly nettles and brambles, that had started to encroach again following last month’s work with scythes. Also some small, low, overhanging branches were removed. Prior to this, and before going off to carry out a litter pick, Chrissie gave us a short introduction to the considerable work of the Friends over and above the holding of work parties. The Friends operate in accordance with a 5-year management plan (due for renewal in 2023), which not only covers tasks to be carried out at work parties but also various other activities such as wildlife surveys, involving the public by running events such as walks, and not least, keeping abreast of plans for housing development in the area and the impact this will have on the Wood. A considerable effort goes into ensuring that planned mitigation measures are satisfactorily implemented, which involves the submission of formal comments on plans and liaising with the borough council and the developers. Mitigation measures include a fence around the Wood, tree planting in buffer zones, hedgerows to ensure wildlife corridors between the Wood and other locations, and a shed or container for keeping our tools on the proposed allotment site. All Friends are encouraged to get more involved.
