There are three official access points to the wood (details here). We encourage visitors to use these rather than any unofficial gaps in the perimeter, in order to avoid unwanted trampling and damage to the understory.
The map on the link above shows the footpaths through the wood: these are a western, a central, and an eastern path. As above, we encourage visitors to keep to these rights of way in order to preserve the wood in the best condition for the wildlife and plants.
Please look under the “Sharphill Nature” link at the top of this page for information about the flora and fauna in the wood. Also there are some pages to help you identify the trees in the wood here.
At present the wood is not buggy- or wheelchair-friendly. In fact the only access point with (on street) parking is at the top of the steep hill at the end of Peveril Road.
Please keep dogs under control as boisterous dogs have been known to frighten small children and even cause adults to fall in Sharphill Wood. This is especially important during the bird-nesting season (March-July) as disturbed birds tend to abandon nests – even if they contain eggs or chicks. Also please take poo bags away. The council will not provide a bin in the wood but there is one on Peveril Drive.
Please be aware that the paths get very muddy during the wetter months (most months!) and wellies are recommended. Please try not to widen the paths when they are muddy as this means less wild space for the plants and animals.
