There were 9 of us today in warm, sunny weather. The shade of the wood was welcome, and fortunately the weather didn’t appear to have brought insects out in force, so comfortable working conditions. We were pleased to welcome newcomers Sara and Hari.
The main tasks were to inspect whips along the western and eastern boundaries, planted during recent years, and to trim back any encroaching vegetation along the main paths. There was so much growth around the whips along much of the eastern boundary that Sara and I had to give up trying to access them and instead help with the path work. Mike and Tim had better luck with the western boundary and got about 2/3 of it done, reporting that most whips were in decent condition. The path team covered the main and western paths, trimming back fresh growth since the June work party using scythes and shears. Also a few invasive Sycamore saplings were removed from one of the trial planting areas. Prior to the break, David had distributed more stones to sections of the eastern path, and after the break Bill and Rod deployed branches to block off an unofficial entrance onto the eastern path.
Wildlife noted included a frequently calling Green Woodpecker, Green-veined White butterfly and Lords-and-Ladies in berry.
Thanks to all
