Chris R. visited the site this week (6th December) and sighted a mixed flock that included Meadow Pipit, Reed Bunting and Yellowhammer, which are all scarce at Sharphill. They were in the hedgerow just south of the northern (Peveril) entrance.
Mixed flocks – groups of different species of bird foraging together – are most often seen during the winter months. It is thought that this behaviour results in advantages for individual birds with respect to locating food and/or spotting predators.
(Thanks to Chris for the excellent photos.)
