John Elwell led a “dawn chorus” walk this morning in excellent weather. Helped by Chrissie, we took a group of 13 people around the wood, listening and looking for birds. As expected, many of the common birds, such as Wren, Chiffchaff and Blackcap, were in full voice throughout the wood. Skylark was singing over the fields on the way up to the wood, and Song Thrush, Linnet and Common Whitethroat were all heard and seen in the hedgerow south of the southern entrance. Both species of woodpecker were heard, and some people managed to see them. One of the visitors pointed out a Treecreeper, and a Mistle Thrush was seen briefly. Bluebells and Early Purple Orchids were observed in full bloom.
