Butterfly Survey September 2013

0
Simon Jackson and I conducted a further butterfly survey at Sharphill Wood today. This will be the last of the season (our availability is limited for the rest of September).
Conditions were fine and warm at the start, but a moderate shower soon developed and we saw nothing further until it brightened up again briefly. We stopped when the next heavy shower was imminent.
The route taken was the same as last time, but apart from a couple of Speckled Wood along the main path, all sightings were outside the wood at the southern end.
Species and numbers seen:
– Speckled Wood – 6;
– Green-veined White – 1;
– Small White – 5;
– Small Tortoiseshell – 1.
There were more unidentified whites, probably about 20+ whites in total.
