John’s report, November 2022:
Annual nest box maintenance has been carried out by Jenni, Tim and John during two site visits this week. This involved inspecting boxes for damage, clearing out those that had been used, and trimming vegetation such as bramble and privet on the approaches to boxes to allow us to access them more easily during inspections next spring. In addition, 5 boxes that had been hung at shoulder height a couple of years ago as an experiment to avoid the need for a ladder had not been used, so these were raised to the normal height of approx. 2.5m. A further 2 nest boxes were moved to nearby trees, because of difficulty accessing them in their existing positions. Everything is now ready for the 2023 nesting season, and let’s hope it will be as good as this year.
