The 14th West Bridgford Brownies offered to help the Friends of Sharphill Wood to clean up after careless Wood users who leave litter. We accepted gratefully! Many people have the right to use the Wood but not so many accept the responsibility of taking care of this beautiful local amenity so well done to the Brownies for being so responsible and doing such a good job.
The inspiration was the Girlguiding World Thinking Day. On International Day of the Girl 2020, Girl Guides and Girl Scouts under 18 from 100 countries were asked what issues they were most concerned about and what they wanted to change about the world. From this data, it appeared that the number one worry is the environment. And so, the World Thinking Day theme from 2022-2024 will be Our World, Our Future. This year’s WTD starts a three-year journey for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts to become environmentally conscious leaders. Also Girlguiding asked their members under 18 what they think is important and the environment came out top of their concerns. Litter picking came out as a worthwhile action for the 14th West Bridgford pack and they are also working on their Blue Peter Green Badge which has involved making pledges around power, plastic and plants. The litter pick and some bird feeders we made from recycled plastic bottles will all count towards this.
So the 13 Brownies and their leaders set to and collected 6 large bags of rubbish in and around the Wood! Streetwise very kindly provided litter pickers, gloves and bags for them to use, and there was too much for them to collect in one evening. (Streetwise picked up the bags afterwards). We hope that this has inspired them to continue the work at Sharphill and in other lovely and fragile sites in Nottingham.
A huge thank you to Deborah Phelps and all of the other leaders and Brownies for your hard work.
