Friends of Sharphill Wood Work Party 28th October 2012

Today was damp but the rain mostly held off whilst we were working. Seven of us focused on clearing the sycamore and Norway Maple saplings that compete aggressively for space light and food, to the detriment of other species (see Autumn newsletter on the website). That is very satisfying work as it is not too heavy and you can see instant results. And as Notts Wildlife point out regeneration of the understorey is very quick to follow. We put in a total of 32 hours doing that, coppicing rangy shrubs, removing litter and replacing a leaflet holder that had been burnt. Saplings will be used for completing path edging.

Work Party 23rd September 2012

This was the first work party of the autumn/winter season, when we no longer need to take account of nesting birds. We focused on removing some sycamore near the middle of the main path, both saplings and moderate sized trees that could be tackled with hand tools. This yielded a number of poles and stakes for path edging at a future work party. We also removed a branch that had fallen across the main path. Although above head level for most people, on balance we thought it was a hazard. Also on the subject of hazard removal, we tamped some mud onto the steps at the southern entrance, bringing them flush with the wooden supports.

Extra Work Party 14th August 2012

Today four of us held just a short work party during the afternoon. We focused on maintaining the main path, and decided on the day that spreading more wood chip was more important than dealing with encroaching nettles. We had dealt with the worst of the nettles during the previous work party, and the remainder had not worsened significantly. Despite dry weather for the last week, there were a few extremely muddy sections on the main path, and  we were able to apply wood chip to most of these. Some of the sections were about half way along the main path, and this meant a long and up hill push for the wheelbarrows. The warm weather meant that we were glad to finish at the allotted time, even though a few more barrow loads would have been beneficial.

Plant list 2012

A plant survey  has recently taken place at the wood, by Gordon Dyne

There are a few plants not seen this time,  this is likely to be due to  the damp conditions we have had over the spring and summer. Alot of the grassland areas around the perimeters are heavily over grown and of course has meant some plants such as grasses have done much better than others.

The tick list was started 2004 and has been added to over time and only shows the plants seen by Gordon in 2012.

Work Party 22/07/2012

Today we held just a short work party, but managed to continue the good work done during previous work parties. In beautiful weather, we cleared weeds from around the remaining whips on the eastern side, planted last winter. We also cleared nettles and other weeds that were encroaching on the main path in places, making it quite narrow. Finally a couple of small trees had fallen over the main path from opposite sides, making an arch just below head level, so we cleared them and made the area safe. The main path was so muddy in places that, even if we had had the manpower, wheeling more wood chip into place would have been very difficult.

What we did at yesterdays work party 24/06/12

Weather conditions were fair, and we were working in areas sheltered from the brisk north-westerly wind. We first had to tackle two fallen branches on the paths. Then we split into two, with most of us continuing to clear “weeds” from from around whips planted last winter, and the remainder spreading wood chip on the main path. We covered most of the whips around the southern end (we did the northern end last time), but 100 or so remain in the middle of the eastern side, and also some inside the wood. Weeds had certainly grown considerably, and each plant took a while to clear. Very few dead whips were found, so overall they seem to be thriving well. The chip spreaders covered many muddy sections of the main path.
