Work Party 27th October 2013

On this occasion the main focus was on sycamore removal along the eastern path. This fortunately gave us shelter from the strong south-westerly wind, and conditions were ideal for working. We were pleased to welcome three new volunteers.

Work Party 22nd September 2013

On a bright sunny autumn Sunday on the 22nd September we held our latest work party. Just  3 of us initially, but we were joined by Guy later. Apologies to David, who popped out at 9:45 to say he would be coming later but I failed to tell him where we would be working. In the event he did some solo wood-chip spreading on the east path. The main group focused on the large gap near the north end of the western boundary. We felled a number of sycamore trees from the area close to the gap and cut back growth from the stumps of other sycamores taken out in previous years. The material was used to create a dead hedge which completely filled the large gap. A smaller gap between this and the north gate was also closed.

Butterfly Survey September 2013

Simon Jackson and I conducted a further butterfly survey at Sharphill Wood today. This will be the last of the season (our availability is limited for the rest of September).
Conditions were fine and warm at the start, but a moderate shower soon developed and we saw nothing further until it brightened up again briefly. We stopped when the next heavy shower was imminent.
The route taken was the same as last time, but apart from a couple of Speckled Wood along the main path, all sightings were outside the wood at the southern end.
Species and numbers seen:
- Speckled Wood – 6;
- Green-veined White – 1;
- Small White – 5;

Butterfly Survey August 2013

Simon Jackson and I conducted a first butterfly survey at Sharphill Wood today. We are both novices, having attended the course at RCP recently, so we may have missed things.

Extra Work Party Thursday 29th August 2013

This additional work party was called specifically to shift some of the wood chip pile to the north end, for easier distribution in future. We had at our disposal a 4-wheel-drive buggy from Rushcliffe Country park, along with driver. We succeeded in moving a sizeable portion of the existing wood pile (probably about 15-20%) to a point alongside the junction of the main and west paths towards the north end. A small amount of that was distributed on the main path at that point, and the rest is available for barrowing wherever it is needed in the northern half of the wood. In addition, a couple of volunteers distributed further wood chip to a 100m section of the east path (southern end) and a 30m section of the west path (the part most prone to mud).

The Friends Group response to the proposed extra 550 houses at Sharphill

The friends of Sharphill have completed and submitted our concerns and objections to the proposed extra 550 houses at Edwalton / Sharphill Wood. A copy has also been sent to each councillor at Rushcliffe Borough Council so they are all aware of our concerns regarding the over development of the Sharphill Wood area.

What we did on our work party 28/07/13

Although some of the regulars were on holiday, a few of us still managed to do a fair amount of work in the fine weather. Much of the main path had encroaching nettles, brambles, etc., making it quite narrow in places, so the main task was to cut these back as far as the edging. In addition, Bill and Richard removed a large amount of litter. We also cut down some branches from a small tree overhanging the main path (blocking the way for the vehicle when we move the wood chip) and space was cleared around a few of the whips planted last winter.
