Work Party 24/01/2016

We once again had fine weather, exceptionally mild for the time of year, but we had to contend with extremely muddy conditions. One group planted whips donated by TCV in the bare area of the northern zone. Species included Field Maple, Cherry Plum, Bird Cherry  and Rowan. In addition they planted 250 native Bluebell bulbs in the same area. These should flower this spring and but should do better next spring. Depending on results we may extend the experiment.

work party 22/11/2015

Once again we had fine weather, and most of us managed to stay sheltered from the cold wind. We were delighted to welcome the 4th West Bridgford scouts, who helped us to plant whips donated by the Woodland Trust. We planted mainly blackthorn in gaps along the eastern boundary, dog rose and elder along the sides of the main and western paths near the north end, and hazel in the north-west zone. Some of the scouts helped barrow wood chip from the pile at the southern end to where it was needed as mulch around the whips. We succeeded in planting all the whips apart from the crab apple. Also Chrissie planted an oak tree grown in her garden from an acorn, and Phil and Ben cleared fallen ash branches from some of the paths, the result of recent gales.

Work Party 25/10/2015

We had fine weather again today and made the most of it. Bill, Mike and Rod had all brought along some whips they had grown in their gardens, and they planted those in various parts of the wood, clearing space as appropriate. Altogether 13 oaks and 2 hawthorns were planted. The other main task was further dead-hedging towards the top of the western perimeter, using more donated posts to hold the material in place. As usual, we collected a load of litter.

extra work party 11/10/2015

At this specially-convened work party we were delighted to welcome the Meadow Covert scout troop for the first time. About a dozen scouts, along with three adults (leaders and a parent), were present and helped us to tackle a couple of important jobs. One job was to dig up some of the larger perennial weeds on the main path, in the hope of reducing encroachment in future years. About 30-35m, from the wood chip pile northwards, was treated, and it will be interesting to see how this fares next summer, in comparison with the rest of the path. The other task was to continue dead-hedging to block more of the gaps along the western side (including one that was blocked last time with stakes but which has subsequently been dismantled).

work party 27/09/2015

Hello All

I nice steady turnout today of seven of us, who weren`t running the marathon!

The weather started off very misty and then the sun started to break it up and turned very warm,  a great day for scenery pictures today but to busy for that.

Not to much on the job front to do but some important ones.

Ian did the loan ranger role today to remove some of the sycamores of varying sizes which created some hedging material for us.

Zdena and Chrissie went to find the tree which had fallen across the main path to gather more material for hedging, but it was no longer there so they went foraging for hedging material.

Work Party 26/07/2015

We had the best turn-out for several months, enabling us to get quite a bit done before the inevitable rain started to get the better of us. Sadly there was a large amount of litter again, including broken glass, 4 plastic garden chairs, and a tent, all of which had to be gathered, taken down the hill, and disposed of. A further unscheduled task was removal of a dead tree that had fallen across the eastern path. We managed to saw through the trunk and swing the resulting two halves off the path.
An ongoing task is tending to the whips planted during the last few years, and Mike led a small team continuing this work today.

Work Party 28/06/2015

Rain in the morning cleared away by the start of the work party, leaving dry but dull conditions, quite comfortable for working in. At this time of year we are somewhat constrained in what we can do, since the bird nesting season is not yet finished and encroaching vegetation along the paths is not ready for trimming back until the flowers have had more time to produce seeds. We therefore had a fairly relaxed and short work party, concentrating on cutting back competing vegetation around some of the whips (mainly near the main and western paths) and on spreading a little wood chip for cosmetic purposes on some of the paths near the southern end.
