work party 23/10/2016

This was a small work party, but nevertheless we achieved a reasonable amount in fine weather conditions. The first job was to coppice a hazel stool in the north-western plantation area. Some of the material from this was then used for path edging and associated stakes, which we installed along part of the path in the north-eastern corner. Here the path was getting very badly defined and several short-cuts had been made. Although only a start was made today, eventually we should revert to a well-defined path through this area of very little understorey. The edging was strapped down to stakes with wire and staples, to deter removal for bonfire or other purposes.

work party 25/09/2016

Today’s work party took place in fine weather. We were able to resume woodland work now it is autumn, and we focused on removing some of the many small Norway Maple and Sycamore trees from the vicinity of the western path. The drill bit for making holes for glyphosate plugs was missing (presumably lost at the end of last winter), so we were limited in terms of poisoning the stumps (although eventually a substitute bit was obtained and we were able to treat some of the stumps). We did manage to uproot a good number of saplings, and a few larger specimens were felled and poisoned. Unfortunately there was a lot of regeneration where we had cut back in the past without treatment, and the roots were far to established to remove.

work party 24/07/2016

Excellent weather today, and as we were working inside the wood we were sheltered from the heat of the sun, although insects were an annoyance at times. This being the last work party during the bird nesting season, we limited ourselves to path work and preparation for the autumn. Phil and Chrissie painstakingly scraped more mud from the “swamp of doom”, and although there was little to show, I’m sure it will help. The rest of us used grass hooks, loppers and shears to cut back some of the encroaching vegetation towards the top of the western path. After a drinks break, we then moved to the “plantation” area in the north-west corner of the wood and marked trees for coppicing and felling later in the year.

work party 26/06/2016

Today’s work party took place in dry but cloudy conditions with mud underfoot in many places following rain overnight and during the previous few days. Except towards the northern end, much of the main path had vegetation encroaching, making it quite narrow in places. Fortunately Nick Mills from NWT’s Skylarks reserve came with three scythes and showed us how to use them. After we had all practised, Nick, Mike and John completed the clearing of the path, while Phil, Ian and Rod undertook other tasks. Phil and Ian attempted to remove some of the excess mud from the worst swampy area on the main path, the hope being that as we bring more stones there in future they will not be quite so submerged in mud.

Work Party 22/05/2016

Today we enjoyed perfect weather, with the wood in its full spring glory. Because of the bird nesting season we were restricted in what we could do. The main task was to tidy up the area in the north east that gets used for parties and BMX biking. Once again we moved some logs (many of them burnt) and picked up plenty or litter, including small fragments of glass. Some new humps had been created for biking, and we levelled these off. It seems that timber used for path edging and stones used to improve muddy areas of paths had been deployed in the construction of some of these ramps. After a drinks break we checked out the whips down the eastern side again, removing some of the recent growth around them and attending to guards and canes.

work party 24/04/2016

Fine weather once again – we have been lucky at recent work parties. Now we are into the bird nesting season, we were somewhat restricted in what we could do, so we had a fairly short work party doing some odds and ends. Rod busied himself with tending to whips again, mainly in the vicinity of the central path. Chrissie and Phil treated the ladder boards again with linseed oil. The rest of us used fallen branches near the eastern path to mark the edges of the path, particularly near the party area towards the north-east corner. As usual there was plenty of litter to bring down, including some bottles.

Easter Work Party 27/03/2016

In decent but breezy weather conditions we accomplished quite a lot in a short space of time. Considering it is Easter, we had a better than expected turn-out, so we shifted a tonne of pebbles onto the paths fairly quickly. The pebbles had recently been delivered to the top of the airstrip, down the hill from the Wheatcroft gate, and were barrowed up to treat some of the muddier sections of the southern end of the central path, the cut-through to the western path, small sections of the western and eastern paths and the steps by the southern entrance.
