Work Party 24/05/2015

We enjoyed decent weather again today, despite the forecast of probable light rain. The main task was further attention to whips around the western perimeter. Many of these, planted about 30 months ago, were ready to have their canes and guards removed, and in some cases they were topped to encourage a more bushy shape and to prevent them bending over as a result of being top heavy. Some of the encroaching vegetation was also removed. Many of these whips, mainly blackthorn, dog rose and privet, should now survive without too much attention.

Work Party 26/04/2015

A lovely sunny day for a work party, not to hot or cold.
We had a group of geo cache people to do their give back to the  community day today.
what a nice lively bunch they are, (" does anyone really know anyone's real name? :-)
We started at the Peveril entrance on the right hand side to clear up a mess of branches and twigs that had been left by den builders and bike track builders!

Our work party 22/03/2015

We enjoyed beautiful sunny weather for this work party, as well as plenty of bird song (in particular Skylark, Blue Tit and Blackbird), a calling Green Woodpecker and a drumming Great Spotted Woodpecker. The main task was to block off some more gaps in the western boundary and some unofficial paths being formed off the western path. There was plenty of dead wood around to achieve this, but in addition we felled a couple of multi-stemmed sycamores to make stakes for containing the dead hedge across a 12 metre gap in the boundary at one point. In addition, Mike transplanted a wild privet plant growing in his garden, David brought up another load of stones for a muddy section of the main path, and Phil tamped the steps at the southern entrance.

Work Party 22/02/15

On this occasion we concentrated on filling boundary gaps towards the northern end of the western side. There was plenty of freshly (and not so freshly) cut timber in the vicinity to make a reasonable dead hedge along a couple of stretches. A few stems of live wood were coppiced to provide stakes to hold the rest in place. This was always going to be a short work party because of the threat of wet and windy weather from early afternoon, but the rain started shortly after 12.30, so having reached a convenient stage we packed up and avoided a soaking. The usual bag of litter was collected.
