work party reminder 27/11/2016

What: We have not yet decided exactly what we will do, and it depends to some extent on the state of the ground. If there has been sufficient rain we might plant some whips that the Woodland Trust donated. Otherwise we will do more coppicing in the north-west zone and use the timber for path edging near the north-eastern corner or for dead hedging.

How: Relevant training will be given where necessary.

work party 23/10/2016

This was a small work party, but nevertheless we achieved a reasonable amount in fine weather conditions. The first job was to coppice a hazel stool in the north-western plantation area. Some of the material from this was then used for path edging and associated stakes, which we installed along part of the path in the north-eastern corner. Here the path was getting very badly defined and several short-cuts had been made. Although only a start was made today, eventually we should revert to a well-defined path through this area of very little understorey. The edging was strapped down to stakes with wire and staples, to deter removal for bonfire or other purposes.

work party 25/09/2016

Today’s work party took place in fine weather. We were able to resume woodland work now it is autumn, and we focused on removing some of the many small Norway Maple and Sycamore trees from the vicinity of the western path. The drill bit for making holes for glyphosate plugs was missing (presumably lost at the end of last winter), so we were limited in terms of poisoning the stumps (although eventually a substitute bit was obtained and we were able to treat some of the stumps). We did manage to uproot a good number of saplings, and a few larger specimens were felled and poisoned. Unfortunately there was a lot of regeneration where we had cut back in the past without treatment, and the roots were far to established to remove.
