A dawn chorus walk took place today, led by John Elwell and accompanied by Mike Rivett from the Friends plus 10 members of the public. Starting from Peveril Drive at 06.00, we walked round by the hedge leading to the back of the cemetery, then up to the wood, down the western path to the southern gate, stopping to admire the Bluebells and the Early Purple Orchids. We returned through the Wheatcroft gate, along the main path and back down the hill. We managed to avoid the worst of the easterly wind, and otherwise the weather was fine. As hoped, there were plenty of birds singing, and we caught sight of quite a few including Treecreeper, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Blackcap and Chiffchaff. The prize for the most vocal species had to go to Wren, which seemed to be singing everywhere. The following bird species were either seen or heard: Kestrel, Woodpigeon, Stock Dove, Collared Dove, Skylark, Wren, Dunnock, Robin, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Blackcap, Chiffchaff, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Treecreeper, Nuthatch, Magpie, Carrion Crow, Chaffinch and Greenfinch.
